51. Az-Zariyat

- The lungs weigh on average 1000 grams in an adult.
- The surface area of the lungs is roughly thesame size as a tennis court.
- An estimated 90% of the lungis filled with air and only 10% is hard tissue.
- The lungs are the only organ in the body thatcan float on water.
- Each lung contains 300-350 million respiratory units called alveoli.
- More than 0.5 a liter ofwater per day is lost through breathing.
- Yawning brings more oxygen to the lungs.
- At rest, an adult breathes about 14 to 16 times per minute. After exercise this canincrease to over 60 times per minute.
- Each day an average person breathes about 25,000 times, and by the time a person reaches 70 years old, they will have taken at least 600 million breaths.
- In the course of a single day, 8,000 to 9,000 litres of breathed-in air meets 8,000 to 10,000 litres of blood pumped in by the heartthrough the pulmonary artery.
